Collector car insurance FAQ

Straight answers about Shopt and about insuring a collector, classic or exotic car.

What is Shopt?

Shopt is an online quoting platform for collector, classic, sports, exotic and enthusiast car insurance. One form gets you quotes from several specialist collector car insurers, compared side by side. Shopt is a program of Covenant Underwriters LLC, a licensed insurance agency.

How much does Shopt cost?

Nothing. Requesting quotes through Shopt is free and there is no obligation to buy.

Which insurance companies does Shopt compare?

American Collectors Insurance, Grundy, Hagerty and OpenRoad. Each decides whether it can quote your vehicle in your state.

Which states is Shopt available in?

Shopt takes quote requests from drivers in all 50 states. Which insurers can quote you depends on your state and your vehicle.

What cars can I insure through Shopt?

Classic and antique cars, muscle cars, hot rods, restomods, replicas and kit cars, sports cars, exotics and modern collectibles that are driven for pleasure rather than daily use. Shopt does not quote everyday auto insurance.

Can I drive my collector car every day?

Collector car policies are meant for cars that are not your daily transportation. Some insurers allow limited commuting; the form asks about it so each insurer can decide.

Where does my car need to be kept?

Most collector car insurers want the car in a private garage or secure enclosed storage, not on the street, in a public garage or in a public lot.

Are racing and track days covered?

No. Racing, track days and competitive driving are not covered by the collector car policies Shopt quotes.

How quickly will I get my quotes?

Many quotes come back by email within about 15 minutes. Some need a person at the insurance company to review them first; your status page shows where each one stands.

How many vehicles can I quote at once?

Up to 15 vehicles on one quote request.

Do I need my VIN or driver's license number to get a quote?

No. Both are optional when you request quotes. They're needed before a policy can be issued, and your status page will ask for them when the time comes.

What about very high-value cars or collections?

Very high-value vehicles and collections are reviewed personally by our concierge team rather than quoted automatically.

Can I choose when my policy starts?

Yes. You pick a start date from tomorrow up to about 30 days ahead, and every insurer quotes for that date.

What does agreed value mean?

Collector car policies are commonly written on an agreed value basis: you and the insurer agree on the car's value when the policy is written, rather than settling a total loss on depreciated market value. Check each quote for the exact terms.

Will the insurance companies call or email me?

No. You only hear from Shopt. We send your quotes and any follow-up questions, and you can reply STOP to any text to stop texts.

Can I save my quote and finish later?

Yes. Your progress saves as you go, and Save for later emails you a link to pick up where you left off.

How do I buy a policy?

Choose the quote you want on your status page and request it online. A licensed agent at Covenant Underwriters LLC finalizes the policy with the insurance company.
